No Government Sponsorship, No Excuses: Nepal’s Para Athletes Prepare for Asian Para Games

Kathmandu, October 2, 2026 — While athletes from across Asia prepare with their teams for the 2026 Asian Para Games in Nagoya, Japan, seven Nepali para-athletes are facing a very different preparation journey.

They are training for one of Asia’s biggest multi-sport events without government sponsorship, according to a report published by The Kathmandu Post on October 1.

Yet the athletes continue to train, hoping to represent Nepal on the international stage when the Games begin on October 18.

Seven Athletes, One Nepal Jersey – Nepal Para Athletes

Nepal’s para-athletics group includes:

  • Prabha Angdembe
  • Shristi Dhewaju
  • Nawaraj Karki
  • Chet Narayan Khanal ‘Samir’
  • Himal Aryal
  • Raju Gurung
  • Mohan Roka

They are preparing for events including sprint races, long jump, shot put, discus and javelin.

Their training locations include Dasharath Stadium and the Army Rehabilitation Centre in Balaju.

Training Without Government Sponsorship

For these athletes, getting to the starting line is only part of the challenge.

The Kathmandu Post reported that the athletes are training without state sponsorship and are dealing with expenses related to training, equipment, diet and other preparation needs.

That means their preparation depends heavily on their own efforts and available support.

Despite those difficulties, training continues.

“Representing Nepal” Is the Motivation

For an athlete preparing for an international competition, proper training facilities, equipment, nutrition and competition opportunities can all make a difference.

But Nepal’s seven para-athletes are continuing their preparations with the resources available to them.

Their goal is straightforward: reach Nagoya and compete for Nepal.

Coach Bimala Rana Magar, who represented Nepal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, is helping train athletes at Dasharath Stadium.

From Kathmandu to Nagoya

The Asian Para Games will bring athletes from across Asia together in Nagoya.

For Nepal’s para-athletes, the journey begins much closer to home — on Kathmandu’s training grounds.

Their story highlights a side of international sport that is often missed: the preparation before the spotlight arrives.

There may be no large sponsorship campaign surrounding their training, but the athletes are still putting in the work.

And when they step onto the competition field in Japan, they will carry the name of Nepal with them.

NepalSportsTV Perspective

The story of Nepal’s para-athletes is not only about medals.

It is also about access to resources, opportunities and support for athletes representing the country internationally.

With the Asian Para Games approaching, NepalSportsTV will follow the team’s journey and report on their performances in Nagoya.

Seven athletes. One country. One international stage. 🇳🇵

Nepal will be watching.
